Health Alert: Kazakhstan, CDC Has Issued a Level 1 Travel Health Notice for Measles

Location: Countrywide

Event: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 1 Travel Health Notice for Measles in Kazakhstan.

Measles is an extremely contagious disease that is caused by an airborne virus.  Symptoms of measles include:

·         High fever

·         Cough

·         Runny nose

·         Red, watery eyes

·         Rash (3-5 days after symptoms begin)

Vaccination is the best way to make sure that you are protected.

Actions to take:

·        All travelers to Kazakhstan, including infants and pre-school aged children, should be fully vaccinated against measles, according to CDC immunization schedules.

·        Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel.

·        If you are not sure if you or your travel companions are fully protected against measles, schedule an appointment to see your healthcare provider at least one month before traveling so that you have enough time to get vaccinated.

·        If you don’t think you can safely receive a measles-containing vaccine, talk to your doctor and consider making alternative travel plans.

·        Visit the CDC Travelers Health Page at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/kazakhstan to learn more.

The CDC has more information on measles, including the transmission and symptoms of measles, available at: https://www.cdc.gov/measles/.
