Location: Astana
Event: Local media is reporting that unauthorized rallies are expected on May 1 (Unity Day) at 1400 near the Kenesary Khan monument in Astana.
U.S. government personnel have been advised to anticipate an increased law enforcement presence around the city and in the area of the Kenesary Khan monument and possible road closures and alternate traffic patterns. Police have the authority to stop individuals without reasonable suspicion or probable cause. U.S. citizens are encouraged to carry their identification.
Non-sanctioned demonstrations can end with mass arrests. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Avoid demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests.
The Embassy will continue to review the security situation and will provide additional information as needed.
