Tsunami Alert – U. S. Embassy Seoul (July 30, 2025)

Tsunami Alert – U. S. Embassy Seoul

Location: Republic of Korea.

Following the 8.8 earthquake off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on July 30, 2025, ROK authorities predicted that tsunamis will have a minimal impact on the Korean peninsula.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), tsunamis of less than 0.3 meters (1 foot) were predicted for the coasts of the Republic of Korea as a result of the Kamchatka earthquake that struck around 0824 KST.

Those travelling to or residing near coastal areas are advised to comply with local authorities if directed to evacuate to higher ground. As the situation could change suddenly, particularly with potential for aftershocks, the U.S. Embassy encourages all U.S. citizens to exercise continued caution and follow all guidance from local authorities.

ACTIONS TO TAKE:

U.S. citizens in Korea are encouraged to monitor local news media and follow the guidance of government officials and local authorities. Updates from the Korean Meteorological Administration  and U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center  can be found online. Stay away from coastal areas when the potential for a tsunami exists. For information about earthquakes, please refer to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earthquake Hazards Program .

Lastly, please ensure your information is up to date with STEP  and advise any U.S. Citizens that DID NOT receive this message to do the same.
