Weather Alert: Northern Vietnam, Typhoon Yagi Aftermath

Weather Alert – Typhoon Yagi Aftermath

Location:  Northern Vietnam

Heavy rains triggered by typhoon Yagi have caused severe floods and landslides in Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, and Cao Bang, resulting in multiple fatalities, injuries and missing persons.  As rains persist and water levels continue rising quickly in rivers, authorities are warning about possible widespread flooding in northern regions, including the area surrounding Hanoi.  Flood warnings due to the Red River water level rising to Alert Level 1 and above Alert Level 1 are in effect for the following areas: Phuc Tan beach (Phuc Tan Ward, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi), Phuc Xa beach (Phuc Xa Ward, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi), and the wards of Tu Lien, Quang Ba, and Phu Thuong (Tay Ho District).

The Embassy continues to monitor the devastating impact and resulting hazards from super typhoon Yagi, and we want to ensure U.S. citizens are aware of the continued dangers in the affected areas.  Felled trees, downed power lines, damaged roads, flooding, and landslides have rendered many roads impassable and/or unsafe.  Please follow local government officials’ guidance and monitor the local news when traveling, especially in mountainous areas.
