The Ministry of Health in Vietnam has reported at least 42 measles cases across Vietnam since March 2024, including in major cities and popular tourist destinations. Initial reports show these cases occurring in children who have not received the routinely-recommended measles vaccines. Approximately 50 countries around the world are reporting large outbreaks, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Travel Health Notice for travelers about precautions to take in these countries: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/level1/measles-globe .
Measles spreads rapidly via respiratory droplets in the air and is among the most contagious viral diseases known, and children aged five (5) and under are at the highest risk for serious complications. There is a highly effective vaccine to protect people from getting or spreading measles. CDC provides guidance on timing and doses for international travelers (including those living abroad), including earlier vaccination for infants compared to those staying in the United States.
