Weather Alert – Typhoon Yagi

Location:  North-East Vietnam

The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi alerts U.S. citizens to Typhoon Yagi.  Typhoon Yagi intensified into a super typhoon Wednesday night and could begin affecting coastal areas in Vietnam by Friday afternoon, September 06, 2024.  By 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Typhoon Yagi is expected to be in the waters east of Hainan Island, with wind speeds of 103 mph. An urgent directive issued by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, states that Yagi is highly likely to affect the sea and mainland of the northern and north-central regions.  Coastal provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ninh are advised to prepare for the storm. Measures include reinforcing roofs, securing loose objects, and planning for the evacuation of residents from low-lying and vulnerable areas.

• Monitor the local news for updates.
• Check your emergency kit to ensure you have needed medicines and other supplies.
• Seek secure shelter.
• Protect your important documents including your passport.
• Keep your family at home informed about your safety and welfare.

• Monitor the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center and the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting  for updated storm tracking information.
