Location: Venezuela, countrywide
Event: The Venezuelan presidential election is scheduled to be held on July 28, 2024.
The U.S. Department of State continues to advise citizens not to travel to Venezuela. The U.S. government has no ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Venezuela.
Leading up to and on the day of the July 28 presidential election, there is the potential for demonstrations, traffic disruptions, shortages of fuel and electricity, and increased law enforcement presence. Voting centers – schools and educational facilities, for the most part – will be safeguarded by the military (FANB) before and after the event. On election day, law enforcement and peacekeeping duties will be performed exclusively by the military, with police forces falling under the military’s supervision. Land borders are expected to close in advance of and for the duration of the election. Political activism, public gatherings, and alcohol sales are prohibited during the election.
The recommendation against travel to Venezuela for U.S. citizens is based on crime, civil unrest, kidnapping, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.
In 2019, the U.S. Department of State withdrew all diplomatic personnel from U.S. Embassy Caracas and suspended operations. All consular services, routine and emergency, remain suspended until further notice.
Actions to Take:
Do not travel to Venezuela.
Bearing in mind the U.S. government has no ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Venezuela, if you decide to travel to Venezuela during the elections, follow the guidance found in the
