Security Alert: Montevideo (Uruguay), Protest Planned February 7

Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Montevideo, Uruguay

February 7, 2024

 

Location:  Announced gathering points include, but are not limited to, the following locations in Montevideo, Uruguay:

  • Plaza Independencia

 

Event:  A demonstration is expected to take place on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Plaza Independencia in Montevideo.  The anarchist group Direct Action is planning the demonstration in opposition to military cooperation between the United States and Uruguay.  Roughly 100 to 200 people are expected to attend.  The group Direct Action has a history of attempting to create disturbances including burning flags, utilizing paint bombs, and using violence.  U.S. government personnel and U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the area of the demonstration beginning at 4:00 p.m. until the protest has ended.

 

Actions to Take: 

  • Avoid the area where the demonstration is taking place.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Keep a low profile.
