Security Alert: Uganda, National Election Campaign Begins

Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Kampala, Uganda (July 9, 2025)

Location: Throughout Uganda

Event: Ugandan National election campaigns from July 2025 to January 2026

Election campaigning has begun, with national political parties holding primary elections, including the National Resistance Movement (NRM) on July 17. Campaign rallies will happen throughout the country and will continue throughout the year leading up to the January 2026 presidential election. Campaign events have the potential for violence. When protests, strikes, and demonstrations turn chaotic, security services may respond with force.  In past election cycles, they have used batons, rubber bullets, tear gas, and gunfire to break up the crowds. Some boda-boda groups leverage campaign rallies as cover for bag snatching and other criminal activities.

Be proactive and ready for any situation. This means having your own food, water, medication, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours for everyone in your household.  Utilities may be shut off, including the internet. Your supplies kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages.  In the event of such outages or a supply chain disruption, you may also want to consider having enough non-perishable food, water, and medication for at least seven days in addition to your 72-hour kit.   Visit FEMA’s website for ideas on how to build your emergency kit.  You can also download the attached checklist.

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Avoid demonstrations.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Notify friends and family of your safety.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
  • Review your personal security and communication plans.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
