Security Alert: Türkiye, Potential for Demonstrations

Location: Throughout Turkiye

Event:  We remind U.S. citizens to exercise increased caution due to the upcoming anniversary of the Hamas October 7, 2023 terrorist attack, the ongoing conflict in Gaza, and the intensifying conflict between Israel and Hizballah.  Demonstrations related to these topics are expected throughout Turkiye the next several days.  As noted in prior messages , protest activity in the past 12 months has involved anti-U.S. rhetoric and property damage to certain U.S.-branded businesses.  U.S. government personnel in Turkiye have been cautioned to maintain a low profile.  Large gatherings may result in enhanced police presence, road closures, and traffic disruptions.  Any gathering, even those intended to be peaceful, could escalate and turn violent.

Actions to Take:

  • Exercise caution and stay alert at locations publicly associated with the United States or Israel.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive alerts.
