Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania (July 16, 2025)

Event: The U.S. embassy has updated travel guidance for U.S. government personnel originally issued March 21, 2025. This guidance prohibited government personnel from traveling to islands or coastal areas south of Kisiju. That prohibition has been lifted.
Due to persistent threats, travelers are still advised to exercise increased vigilance and awareness when traveling to islands and coastal areas south of Kisiju.
The existing prohibition on U.S. government personnel traveling without prior approval to the Mtwara Region remains in effect. This prohibition has been extended to include the border areas of Ruvuma Region south of Songea.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid the Mtwara region and areas on Tanzania’s southern border with Mozambique, including in the Ruvuma region.
- Stay alert when traveling to islands and coastal areas south of Kisiju.
- When traveling to remote areas in Tanzania carry emergency medical supplies such as individual first aid kits.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Notify friends and family of your safety and keep your cell phone charged.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Review your personal security plans.
- Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
