Weather Alert: (Valencia) Spain, Emergency Services Continue to Respond to Flooding as Heavy Rains are Expected to Continue

Weather Alert: Heavy Rains to Continue Across Spain; Update on Aftermath in Valencia 

(October 31, 2024) 

  

Location:  Valencia, Castellón, Tarragona, Teruel, western Andalucía, Extremadura, Salamanca, Ávila, and surrounding areas. 

 

Event:  The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Agencia Estatal de Meteorología, Aemet) continues to issue orange and red alerts (the two highest alert levels) in various regions throughout Spain due to continued heavy rainfall. 

 

Severe flooding in Valencia and surrounding regions occurred on October 29.  Spain’s emergency services continue to respond. Some areas remain without power or cellular phone service. 

 

Travel to and within affected regions may be disrupted; the following information is specific to modes of travel in Valencia. 

  • Flights – flights resumed at Valencia airport, with some delays. 

  • Trains – trains to and from Valencia are canceled until further notice. 

  • Buses – public buses are operating normally. 

  • Subway – the subway system remains closed. 

  • Taxis – operating normally within the city. 

  • Roads – major roads entering and leaving Valencia are closed to private vehicles. 

 

Actions to Take:  

  • Notify friends and family of your safety.  

  • Avoid affected areas. 

  • Follow the instructions of local authorities. 

  • Monitor local weather reports. Even where it is not raining, rain in other nearby areas can lead to hazardous conditions. 

  • Avoid driving to or within affected areas. 

  • Call 112 for emergency assistance.
