Message for U.S. Citizens: Human Rights-Related Designations of South Sudanese Officials

Event: Today, the United States imposed financial sanctions on the Governor of Unity State and the Commissioners of Koch and Mayendit Counties for their connection to serious human rights abuses in Leer County, Unity State.  These officials are responsible for threatening the peace, security, or stability of South Sudan by engaging in conduct that constituted serious abuses or violations of human rights or violations of international humanitarian law.  For further information, please see the announcement made by the Treasury Department. 

The Embassy will continue to review the security situation and will provide additional information as appropriate.

 

This is a good time to review personal security procedures.

Actions to Take:

  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists, or where crowds gather.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
