Security Alert: Reminder to U.S. Citizens in Somalia of Level 4 Do Not Travel Advisory

Event:  U.S. citizens in Somalia are reminded that the Travel Advisory for Somalia remains at Level 4 – Do Not Travel due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and the lack of availability for consular services, among other concerns.  While violence, unrest, or attacks can occur at any time, concerns are heightened now due to the increased potential of civil unrest in southern Somalia.  U.S. citizens in Somalia should consider departing the country or have a plan to depart in the event of a crisis, including knowing the entry requirements for U.S. citizens to enter a neighboring country.  There is no permanent consular presence at U.S. Embassy Mogadishu.  Therefore, the Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens in Somalia is extremely limited.

Actions to Take:

  • Review your personal security plans.

  • Make a contingency plan to leave Somalia.

  • Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Keep a low profile.

  • Monitor local media for updates.
