Senegal will hold national presidential elections on Sunday March 24, 2024. The government usually issues a decree with election day security measures that include the suspension of all travel between regions within Senegal. This decree has not yet been issued, but the Embassy expects it will come before March 24.
During previous election cycles, the suspension of travel between regions has gone into effect at midnight before the election. This year that would be midnight on Saturday, March 23. U.S. citizens should expect police and Gendarmerie checkpoints along all main roads. Vehicles will be stopped, and travel between regions will be suspended until midnight Sunday, March 24.
U.S. citizens are advised to take extra care when traveling, as normal traffic patterns may be disrupted, and comply with all local laws.
Actions to take:
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Avoid crowds.
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
