Demonstration Alert: Ngor (Senegal), Call for Demonstration on May 23 at 3:00pm

Alert: Potential Demonstration in Ngor

The U.S. Embassy is aware of a call for a demonstration demanding harsh penalties for same-sex relations scheduled to take place on Friday, May 23, at 3:00 PM after the Jummah prayer.  The demonstration will take place in Ngor starting at the Ngor roundabout and moving toward the Casino de Cap Vert of Ngor.  The rally has not yet been authorized by the municipality.  If this event takes place as planned, such emotionally charged issues can pose a threat to bystanders.

U.S. citizens are strongly urged to avoid any areas where such events are ongoing and remain vigilant.  While rallies and demonstrations in Dakar can be peaceful, protests can sometimes quickly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are encouraged to exercise caution.
