Continued Demonstration Alert: Dakar (Senegal)

Late last night, the National Assembly voted to postpone the presidential election to December 15, 2024. As a result, protests are likely today throughout the city and country.

Protests may lead to road blockages and dangerous points along the route from many Dakar neighborhoods to Dakar’s International Airport (DSS).  As a precautionary measure, the embassy advises Americans in Senegal to avoid travel to the extent possible during the hours of 1300 to 0300, as this timeframe has seen more protest activity during periods of political tension in recent years.  Political demonstrations can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence at any hour, so Americans are reminded to remain vigilant.

If the Embassy receives more specific information regarding dates and times of demonstrations, marches, or gatherings, we will send updated alerts. American citizens are urged to avoid any areas where such events are ongoing.

Actions to take:

  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Avoid demonstrations.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
