Location: Rwanda Districts bordering DRC and Burundi
Event: The U.S. Embassy in Kigali advises U.S. citizens that the increase in conflict inside the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) may impact security in the areas along the DRC and Burundi borders with Rwanda.
U.S. Embassy personnel are prohibited from traveling to districts which border the DRC and Burundi without special permission. Volcanoes National Park, Gishwati Forest, Mukura Forest Reserve, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe Forest National Park are all located in Rwandan districts that border neighboring countries with poorly marked borders and increased risk of armed violence.
Relations between Burundi, the DRC and Rwanda remain tense, with reported incidents of cross-border incursions and armed violence.
U.S. citizens should:
- Avoid traveling to the border between Burundi, DRC, and Rwanda
- Remain alert and avoid large public gathering places.
- Keep a low profile.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Review your personal security plans.
- Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
