Security Alert: Rwanda, Security Impact in Border Areas

Location: Western Province areas near DRC border

Event:  U.S. Embassy Kigali advises U.S. citizens that the increase in conflict inside the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) may impact security in the areas along the border in Rwanda, increasing the risk to visitors in the region.  U.S. citizens are advised not to travel to Western Province districts along the border with DRC.

U.S. citizens should:

• Remain alert and avoid large public gathering places.
• Keep a low profile.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Review your personal security plans.
• Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
• Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
