Health Alert: Rwanda, 10:00 PM Curfew and Other Enhanced COVID Prevention Measures

Location:  Rwanda

Event:   Effective December 20, 2021, movements are prohibited nationwide between 10:00 PM and 4:00 AM. All businesses must close at 9:00 PM.

Passengers arriving to Rwanda must quarantine for three (3) days at a designated quarantine hotel at their own cost. A COVID-19 PCR test will be taken upon arrival at the airport. A second test will be taken on day three (3), and a third test will be taken on day seven (7). Tests will be performed at a designated testing site and the traveler will cover the cost of the tests. Please refer to the “Info Note for Passengers” on the left-hand side of the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) website here for additional information. You can find a list of the designated quarantine hotels here.

Please visit the U.S. Embassy’s COVID-19 page here for additional details regarding Rwanda’s COVID-19 prevention measures, including possible quarantine exemptions for tourists visiting national parks (under “Quarantine Information” on the website).

If you test positive for COVID-19 upon arrival or during your time in Rwanda (even if you are fully vaccinated and/or boosted), the severity of your symptoms will determine whether you are isolated in a government-run treatment center or a hotel at your own cost. You will not be permitted to leave Rwanda until you receive a negative PCR test result, which could take several weeks from the first detection of your infection. The U.S. Embassy cannot influence the Rwandan health authorities to release you from isolation or permit you to exit Rwanda until you receive a negative PCR test result. Your vaccination status does not change these protocols.
