Demonstration Alert: Bucharest (Romania), Protest Expected on January 24

Location:  Bucharest, Romania   

 

Event:  On Sunday, January 24, 2021, the Romanian Federation of Railway Carriers’ Unions, the Railway Hospitals Union, and the Union of Dismissed Military Personnel in Romania will organize public gatherings in Bucharest to express their dissatisfaction with recent fiscal budgetary measures included in Government Ordinance no. 226/2020 related to salary rights and railway rolling stock purchases. 

 

The gatherings have received the approval from Bucharest City Hall (a signed protocol is in place) and are scheduled to occur simultaneously on Sunday between 1100 and 1300.   They are expected to include anywhere from 20 to 100 participants in 20 different locations throughout Bucharest to include:   foreign embassies (the United States, Russia, China, Italy, France, Germany, the U.K.), the Representative of the European Commission, the Romanian Presidency, the Romanian Government, Romanian Ministries (Public Finances, Transportation, Work and Social Justice, Internal Affairs, Defense, European Funds, Health, Water and Forests), the National Liberal Party, and SRI headquarters. 

 

Around 100 participants carrying banners and sound equipment are expected to participate in the gathering at the U.S. Embassy.   

 

Protests and demonstrations are often unpredictable.  U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the aforementioned areas during the above times.  It is expected that normal pedestrian and vehicular traffic in these areas could be adversely affected.

  • Monitor local media for updates. 
  • Keep a low profile.       
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport.
