Weather Report: Philippines, Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Affecting Mindanao

Location: 07.07°N, 127.06°E – Offshore Davao Oriental

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded a magnitude 7.5 earthquake offshore of Davao Oriental at 9:43 a.m. on October 10, 2025.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the following coastal areas:

  • Eastern Samar
  • Dinagat Islands
  • Davao Oriental
  • Southern Leyte
  • Surigao Del Norte
  • Surigao Del Sur
  • Leyte

The Office of Civil Defense and Philippine government disaster management agencies are conducting assessments and deploying first responders. The Embassy continues to monitor the situation in conjunction with Philippine authorities.

The Customer Service Center in Davao that handles general ACS and visa queries is currently offline. The American Citizens Services section in Manila and Consular Agency in Cebu are fully operational.

Actions to Take:

  • Residents in the tsunami warning areas are strongly advised to immediately evacuate to higher grounds or move farther inland. Refrain from activities like swimming, surfing, fishing, and boating.
  • Follow instructions from local officials, which may include closing beaches, evacuating low-lying areas, harbors and marinas, or moving ships to deeper water if safe to do so.
  • Exercise extreme caution if you live within the affected areas.
  • Stay calm and alert.  During periods of seismic activity, watch out for falling objects and stay away from glass windows, shelves, cabinets, and other heavy objects that may cause injury.
  • Maintain awareness of conditions and avoid steep slopes.
  • Monitor local media and the PHIVOLCS website  for updates.
  • Monitor updates from local disaster and risk reduction management offices.
