Demonstration Alert: Lima (Peru), Protests and Road Blockages in Lima on July 9

Demonstration Alert:  U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru

Locations:  Congress of the Republic (Avenida Abancay) and roads in Arequipa, Cusco, Ica, and La Libertad

Event:  CONFEMIN Protests and Road Blockages (Ongoing)

 

The U.S. Embassy in Lima is tracking escalating demonstrations by members of CONFEMIN (National Confederation of Small-scale and Artisanal Mining of Peru) at the Congress of the Republic.  Protests currently occupy two vehicle lanes of Avenida Abancay in Lima.  CONFEMIN members have been at this site since June 27, and plan to remain at this site until their demands are met.  Buses carrying protestors may be arriving in Lima over the coming days and crowd sizes may increase unexpectedly.

 

Simultaneously, CONFEMIN members continue to block roads in the following regions:

·       Chala, Arequipa

·       Chumbivilcas, Cusco

·       Pataz, La Libertad

·       Nasca, Ica

 

Actions to take:

·       Avoid the areas of demonstrations or roadblocks.

·       Exercise caution if in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

·       Limit use of public transportation in affected areas.

·       Exercise vigilance when using public transportation.

·       Monitor local media for updates.

·       Review your personal security plans.
