Demonstration Alert: Lima (Peru), Unplanned Transportation Strike on October 6

Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru

Location: Lima and Callao, Peru

Event: October 6th Unplanned Transportation Strike

U.S. citizens in Lima should be aware of an ongoing unplanned transportation strike involving approximately 50 buses from various companies. The strike is in protest of recent incidents of extortion and violence targeting public transportation drivers. As part of the strike, buses have established traffic blockages in several areas of Lima, causing significant disruptions.

Affected Areas:

·       Central Lima: Blockages reported on the Panamericana Highway near Estadio Alberto Gallardo, Óvalo Zárate, and Óvalo Habich.

·       Surquillo: Expect disruptions at Óvalo Higuereta and along Avenida Angamos.

·       San Isidro and Miraflores: Heavy traffic anticipated on Avenida Primavera, Avenida Angamos, and the Panamericana Highway. Consider using alternative routes such as Javier Prado for quicker transit.

These events are not authorized by the government and may be accompanied by unplanned gatherings or demonstrations, particularly in central Lima. Additional demonstrations could occur with little notice, leading to further disruptions to public transportation, restricted movement, and road closures.

Safety Advisory:  U.S. citizens are strongly advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are known to occur and to leave any area where crowds or protests develop. Demonstrations can escalate into violence, and heavy traffic conditions and heightened security presence should be expected.

 Actions to take:

·       Avoid demonstration areas, large crowds, public gatherings, and roadblocks.

·       Exercise caution if in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

·       Exercise vigilance when using public transportation.

·       Adjust travel plans to avoid affected areas and allow extra time for delays.

·       Follow instructions from the Peruvian National Police, Peruvian Armed Forces, and local authorities.

·       Monitor local media for updates.
