Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (July 25, 2025)

Event: The Papua New Guinea government plans to host numerous major events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of independence. These major events often draw large crowds, which may attract opportunistic crime and violence.
Last Saturday, during PNG Story Highlands Day at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, large crowds and opportunists led to security incidents. Police fired tear gas and warning shots. Vehicles were stoned, and attempted carjackings and robberies occurred.
More events are scheduled in coming weeks, including the final PNG Story regional day on July 26 at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium. U.S. citizens are advised to consider carefully whether to attend such events as well as the risk of being in the vicinity.
Good situational awareness and adherence to security policies significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Please consider these helpful tips.
