Event: Demonstrations are taking place January 10 by civil servants protesting an increase in their salary deductions. Members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) have participated in the protests leading to a reduced RPNGC presence throughout the rest of the National Capital District, which opportunists have taken advantage of to increase looting and petty crimes.

U.S. government personnel are advised to avoid large gatherings of people and take extra precaution until the RPNGC resumes its duties.

• Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
• Monitor local media for updates.
