The U.S. Embassy would like to wish you and your families a healthy, safe, and happy holiday season.
It’s the time of the year where, historically, worldwide threats of attacks and crime rates increase. This region is no exception and has historically seen an increase in violent crimes during the holiday seasons where criminals are bolder and willing to commit riskier crimes. A criminal act can occur at any time and any place; extra care and caution is important.
As a reminder, personal security begins and ends with you. Good situational awareness accompanied with an adherence to these recommendations below significantly reduces one’s chances of becoming a victim of crime. Please consider some of these helpful tips in making your season a safe one:
- Make sure to use your alarms (home and vehicle) consistently.
- When you drive, make sure all windows are up and doors locked.
- Be mindful of your surroundings and any circumstance that may appear concerning. At home, lock your doors and store valuables in a safe space.
- Do not flash cash or jewelry while out making purchases or discuss finances in public.
- When your vehicle is parked, make sure all packages or items are concealed.
- When returning to your vehicles, keep your hands as free as possible and your car key at the ready.
- December is usually wet season and driving during evenings/dusk can be a traffic hazard. Vehicle accidents are common, and the situation can be aggravated with increased drunk driving/driving under the influence.
- Vary your routes and times to avoid creating predictable patterns that could be exploited by criminals.
- Consider carrying extra food/water/clothes with you in your vehicle in case you become stranded due to unsafe travel conditions.
