Location: Papua New Guinea

Event: Papua New Guinea will host a series of events leading up to its 50th Independence Day on September 16, 2025, including celebrations in the National Capital District, Port Moresby. The PNG government has also designated September 15 and 17 as additional national holidays. While these events are intended to be celebratory in nature, they may also present potential security risks. The Embassy is aware of the following schedule of events. Please note that some of these events may not be open to the public. They are shared for your situational awareness and to help you plan accordingly or avoid these locations as necessary.

Large gatherings and traffic congestion during these events may increase risks of petty crime, such as pickpocketing and theft, as well as more serious threats, including carjacking, physical assault, and mob violence. As Independence Day approaches, the likelihood of overwhelmed security forces, alcohol-related disorderly behavior, and potential accidents or altercations may rise.

Good situational awareness accompanied with an adherence to security policies and recommendations significantly reduces the risk of becoming a victim of crime. To minimize risk, please consider the following security guidelines.

Security Recommendations:

  • Avoid crowds: Stay away from large gatherings, as they can escalate unpredictably.
  • Keep a low profile: Avoid drawing attention to yourself through behavior, dress, or displays of wealth, such as wearing jewelry or watches.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Stay alert to people and activities around you, especially in unfamiliar or crowded areas.
  • Trust your instincts: Leave immediately if a situation feels unsafe.
  • Secure vehicle and valuables: Carry minimal cash. Keep windows up and doors locked while driving. Conceal packages when your vehicle is parked.
  • Limit travel: Stay in secure areas. Avoid unnecessary movement during major events.
  • Travel in groups: Avoid attending events alone. Stay with trusted companions. Avoid walking or driving at night unless necessary.
  • Plan transportation: Use reliable and vetted transportation services or trusted drivers. Avoid using taxis, as they may not meet safety or security standards.
  • Use alarms: Make sure to use your alarms (home and vehicle) consistently.
  • Do not resist robbery attempts: If confronted, comply with demands to avoid escalation.
  • Review your personal security plan: Regularly assess and update your security measures.
  • Keep travel documents ready: Ensure passports and other travel documents are current and easily accessible.
