Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (June 13, 2025)

Location: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Event: The U.S. Embassy has observed an increase in reports of criminal activity in Port Moresby. There have been recent reports of petty theft, pickpocketing, and carjackings. On June 7, there was a carjacking across from Unity Mall.

As a reminder, Papua New Guinea is under a Level 3 Travel Advisory (Reconsider Travel) with certain areas such as Central Bougainville and the Highlands Region other than Mt. Hagen and Goroka designated as Level 4 (Do Not Travel).

Areas in which to maintain increased caution in Port Moresby (Level 3 Travel Advisory) include the following (see maps below):

  • Gerehu Stage 6
  • Morata Area
  • 9-Mile Area
  • Erima Area and the Kumul Flyover Underpass
  • Koura Highway in the Tokorara Area
  • Hohola Area
  • Boroko/Korobosea area, especially at the Taurama Rd/Gavamani Rd bus stop
  • Badili and Gabutu Area
  • Koki Market Area
  • Poreporena and Hanuabada Villages

 

Good situational awareness and adherence to security recommendations and best practices significantly reduces one’s chances of becoming the victim of a crime.  Please consider these helpful tips.

Security recommendations:

  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Use your alarms (home and vehicle) consistently.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and any circumstance that appear concerning.
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
  • When you drive, keep doors locked and windows up
  • When your vehicle is parked, make sure all packages or items are concealed.
  • When returning to your vehicles, keep your hands as free as possible and your car key at the ready.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as expensive jewelry or watches.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
