A twenty-four-hour nationwide strike beginning at 7AM on Friday, March 21, 2025 has been called by construction and teachers’ unions in response to social security reform law 163. As part of this action, it is expected that groups of demonstrators will assemble at various locations around the country.
Panamanian police mitigation tactics include but are not limited to a variety of non-lethal tactics, including the deployment of tear gas.
As a general reminder please exercise caution and flexibility in your movements, and refer to the below guidance:
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Exercise caution when traveling and plan routes accordingly.
If you find yourself in an area where tear gas is deployed, follow these tips to minimize exposure and avoid injury:
- If in a vehicle, roll up windows and set any ventilation to internal circulation.
- Remove contaminated clothing and place in plastic bag until they can be washed.
- Flush affected areas with water.
- If symptoms persist or worsen (such as severe breathing issues, eye damage, or burns), seek medical attention immediately.
