Health Alert: Skopje (North Macedonia), Massive Fire at Hazardous Materials Factory

Location:  Tetovo and surrounding area, North Macedonia

Event:  On Wednesday, November 22, 2023, a massive fire broke out in a warehouse that stored chemicals and other hazardous materials in the village of Falishe in Tetovo, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the capital Skopje.  The Center for Public Health (CPH) recommended that citizens stay at home and not go out unnecessarily because the burning of such substances creates poisonous and harmful gases in the air. The CPH is also currently conducting tests on the drinking water.

Actions to Take:

• Monitor local media for updates on the situation, especially regarding air quality.
• Follow local authorities’ guidance.
• Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary outings.
• Have necessary supplies like masks on hand to mitigate exposure to harmful gases.
• Visit the CDC Travelers Health Page.
• Consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for country health advisories or call CDC at 800-232-4636 or 404-639-3534.
