Security Alert: Abuja (Nigeria), Reminder to U.S. Citizens That Crime Is Rated Critical

Security Alert: September 17, 2025 – Mission Nigeria

Location: Abuja, Nigeria

Event:

   High-Crime Reminder

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja wishes to remind U.S. citizens that the State Department rates Nigeria CRITICAL for crime.  The Embassy recently received several reports of armed robbery, to include an expat jogger in Maitama by perpetrators on a motorbike, in areas frequented by the expatriate community.

Increasing your situational awareness, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can potentially reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime.

Actions to Take:

  • Stay alert in public places and consider avoiding locations and venues frequented by Westerners and expatriates.
  • Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
  • When you are out in town, keep large amounts of money and expensive jewelry and electronics hidden.
  • Do not travel late at night and avoid traveling to locations that lack security guards, gated parking lots, or adequate lighting.
  • Whenever possible, avoid traveling or exercising alone.
  • Lock your vehicle and residential doors and always keep the windows of your vehicle rolled up and do not keep bags and other personal belongings unattended
  • Avoid predictable routines.
  • Plan ahead of time and know how to reach your destination without getting lost.
  • If taking taxis, use app-based transportation or a call-in taxi service.
