Event: Important Security Reminder for Nigeria
The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria reminds U.S. citizens that the Department of State Travel Advisory for Nigeria is Level 3, recommending travelers reconsider travel to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, armed gangs, and inconsistent availability of health care services. For detailed information, visit: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Nigeria.html
U.S. government employees and their dependents at Embassy Abuja and U.S. Consulate General Lagos are restricted from travel outside of limited areas of Abuja and Lagos and may only travel to other areas of Nigeria for government-related business and only with additional security assistance. When traveling to and from the airport, U.S. government personnel must take additional security precautions.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria strongly encourages all U.S. citizens resident or traveling in Nigeria to adopt similar security precautions. The security environment in Nigeria remains unpredictable, with threats from terrorism, theft, kidnapping, and violent crime affecting both urban and rural areas.
Actions to Take:
- Review the current Travel Advisory for Nigeria and familiarize yourself with restricted areas.
- Vary your routes and times of travel, especially when going to and from the airport.
- Keep family and friends informed of your travel plans and whereabouts.
- Ensure your U.S. passport is valid and accessible in case of emergency departure.
- Stay alert in public places, especially at shopping centers, movie theaters, and places of worship.
- Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
- Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches.
- Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
- Use caution when driving at night and reconsider walking to unknown locations or long distances.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
- Familiarize yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings.
- Review your personal security plans.
