Event: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Burma (Myanmar) on March 28, 2025, and Mandalay City, Myanmar’s capital city Nay Pyi Taw, and other locations in central Myanmar are extensively damaged. There have been over 2000 deaths and that is likely to increase.
Access to medical care in areas affected by the earthquake is severely limited with hospitals and clinics at capacity or no longer functioning. In addition, American citizens should not expect to be able obtain routine medication and medical supplies on the local economy in the earthquake affected areas.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey most large earthquakes are followed by aftershocks. There have been reports of aftershocks in Myanmar. U.S. citizens are advised to follow the guidance of building management and local authorities in the case of aftershocks.
