Security Alert – Possible Protests at the Maputo International Airport and Praça dos Combatentes – U.S. Embassy Maputo, Mozambique (July 21, 2025)

Location: Maputo International Airport and Praça dos Combatentes in Maputo

Event: Local police in Maputo have started the process of restricting street vendors from operating around the Praça dos Combatentes (Xiquelene) and relocating them.  Additionally, there may be protests at the Maputo International Airport with the arrival of opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane, at approximately 1500 hrs today, July 21, 2025.

Both events may lead to crowds, a large police presence, and possible traffic disruptions.

The U.S. Embassy is open and continues to offer regular U.S. citizen services.  Individuals should review the security best practices listed below.

  • Avoid crowds.
  • Remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Maintain a low profile and carry proper identification.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
