Event: Presidential candidate Venacio Mondlane announced that he plans to return to Mozambique on the morning of January 9th. The routes to and from Maputo International Airport may become blocked and impassable due to the potential for protests. Police may fire tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse crowds and open roads.
U.S. embassy personnel and U.S. citizens are advised to plan around the possibility of issues at the airport, adjusting travel plans as required.
The U.S. Embassy will be closed on January 9 for a National Day of Mourning for President James Earl Carter, Jr. and expects to reopen on January 10.
