Event: There is the potential for volatile protests in Maputo and across Mozambique through the weekend. Border crossings may close with little to no notice and strand travelers. As of this message, the South Africa border crossing at Komatipoort is closed, although that may change. Major roads and routes may likely be blocked by protests and debris. Travel in and around Maputo could quickly become dangerous with little to no notice. U.S. government personnel are advised to limit travel to within 20 minutes of residences. Currently, the U.S. Embassy in Maputo will be open on Monday, October 28, 2024.
The Embassy strongly recommends that U.S. citizens consider the following throughout the weekend:
Actions to Take:
- Minimize unnecessary movements.
- Avoid all but emergency travel between sunrise and sunset.
- Please remain aware of your surroundings and avoid larger crowds when possible.
- Maintain a low profile and carry proper identification.
- Review your security plans.
