Demonstration Alert: Morocco, Planned Protests in Casablanca and Rabat

Event: Demonstrations are expected in Casablanca at the U.S. Consulate General on Boulevard Moulay Youssef in the afternoon and evening of Friday, December 8, 2023.  Demonstrations are also expected in Rabat in Bab El Had Square on the morning of Sunday, December 10, 2023. Protests are also possible in typical gathering places in other major cities.  Though protests in Morocco are normally peaceful, these events may have large turnouts and crowds may be emotionally charged. Heavy traffic and street closures could result in congestion and delays in the areas of the largest gatherings. Security services may try to prevent large gatherings, creating the potential for more dangerous situations.  U.S. citizens are advised to avoid those areas during the late afternoon and evening hours and U.S. Consulate General Casablanca will close at 16:00 on Friday, December 8, 2023.

Actions to take:

  • Avoid the area of the anticipated protests.

Monitor local media for updates.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.

Avoid large crowds.

Keep a low profile.

Carry proper identification.

Use caution when walking or driving at night.
