Event: In the past week, Moldovan media published news of an attempted arson that was thwarted by Moldovan police and was related to Moldovan presidential elections. According to these media reports, the planned attack targeted the Moldovan Central Electoral Commission and Moldovan Police facilities.
Due to these reported tensions surrounding the second round of Moldova’s presidential election this Sunday, November 3, the U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens exercise caution and an increased level of awareness. Following the election, there may be a higher likelihood of election-related unrest or protests around election-related institutions.
U.S. citizens are urged to avoid large gatherings and any areas where such events are ongoing and remain vigilant. While rallies and demonstrations in Moldova can be peaceful, we recommend increased caution, since even peaceful demonstrations can turn dangerous at any time.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid the area of the demonstration
- Exercise caution in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests
- Monitor local media for updates
- Expect traffic delays and road closures
- Keep a low profile
- Review your personal security plans
U.S. Embassy Chisinau reminds U.S. citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security and to review emergency procedures, as outlined in the State Department’s Worldwide Caution Travel Advisory.
The Embassy will continue to review the situation and provide additional information as needed.
