Security Alert – Bamako, Mali – September 19, 2025

Bamako, Mali

Event:
On Monday, September 22 Mali will celebrate its Independence Day.  A national holiday has been declared.  U.S. citizens in Bamako should be aware of a larger than usual presence of security forces, large celebratory gatherings or parades, and a potentially significant impact on traffic throughout the city.  Due to the strong possibility of road closures and traffic congestion, U.S. citizens are advised to consider postponing unnecessary travel and remaining at home if possible.

U.S. Government personnel are advised to take the same precautionary measures.

American citizens are advised to:

  • Avoid the areas of demonstrations
  • Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks
  • Continue to exercise vigilance while in Mali
  • Exercise caution if in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests
  • Review your personal security plans
  • Keep a low profile
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Keep some form of communication with you
  • Monitor local media for updates
