Weather Alert: Laos, Typhoon Wipha

THE UNITED STATES MISSION IN THE LAO PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC (LAO PDR) IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION AS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT TO AMERICAN CITIZENS LIVING IN AND/OR TRAVELING IN THE LAO PDR. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

Event: Typhoon Wipha is expected to make landfall in the northern Lao provinces between Tuesday, July 22, and Wednesday, July 23. The Mekong River Commission has issued a high-risk warning for flash floods in Luang Prabang.  Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in the following areas:

  • Phongsaly
  • Xiengkhuang
  • Luangnamtha
  • Vientiane
  • Oudomxay
  • Luangprabang
  • Xaysomboun
  • Bolikhamxay
  • Khammuane
  • Savannakhet
  • Attapeu
  • Sekong
  • Champasak

We urge you to:

  1. Avoid any low-lying areas prone to flooding;
  2. Monitor the news and stay abreast of developments;
  3. Take precautions to safeguard yourselves, your families, and your residences;
  4. Check your emergency kit to ensure you have needed medicines and other supplies;
  5. Protect your important documents including your passport; and
  6. Keep your family at home informed about your safety and welfare.
