Health Alert: Kosovo, Updates on Opening of Airports and Land Borders

Country: Kosovo

Event: 1) Pristina airport opening 28 June to all travelers. 2) Skopje airport opening 01 July to all travelers. 3) Regional land travel. 4) Travel this summer to Kosovo.

With the reopening of the airports mentioned below, and the difficulty of transit from Kosovo to Serbia, we no longer recommend the use of Belgrade International Airport.

The EU is expected to announce travel restrictions, but we do not know if it will include passengers arriving from the U.S., nor if it will allow passengers who are only transiting the area. We will publish updates as we receive them.

UPDATE 1. The Government of the Republic of Kosovo is reopening the Pristina International Airport, with increased measures for safety and health, on 28 June. Authorities recommend that arriving passengers (not departing passengers) have a negative RT-PCR test not older than four days, but this is not obligatory. Contact the airport, airlines, or travel agents for flight information.

UPDATE 2. The Government of North Macedonia announced that Skopje International Airport will reopen on 01 July. Authorities require passengers to arrive no later than three hours before their flight, to wear a protective face mask, and to maintain social distancing. Check the airport website for flight information and updates.

UPDATE 3. Kosovo land borders are already open without restrictions to passenger traffic. The Government of North Macedonia announced the full opening of its borders effective 26 June. There are no longer requirements for PCR tests, self-isolation, or quarantine for travelers entering North Macedonia. Other countries in the region continue to enforce border restrictions. Check with the respective Embassy websites for the latest information before traveling.

UPDATE 4. If you are an American citizen located in the United States and you want the latest information on traveling to Kosovo, please contact the Kosovo Embassy. The airport is now open to all travelers; however,we expect the summer travel season to be greatly affected by the pandemic and the Department of State still has a Global Level 4 Health Advisory – Do Not Travel.

Archived Information:

Normal consular operations remain suspended due to COVID-19. Travelers with an immediate travel need may contact us at PristinaACS@state.gov to make an emergency appointment. We can usually issue an emergency passport on the same day as the application, and it is valid for one year. As soon as we can begin processing regular passports, we will advertise that update here. All non-emergency services, including notarials, remain suspended until further notice.

On March 31, the Department of State updated the
Global Level 4 Health Advisory – Do Not Travel, due to the global impact of COVID-19.

On March 16, the United States Embassy in Pristina reduced staffing and operations, however, emergency consular services for U.S. citizens continue to be available. To apply for an emergency passport, or if you have any other urgent matter, contact PristinaACS@state.gov.
