Weather Alert: Osaka (Japan), Typhoon Mawar Causes Disruptions

The remnants of Typhoon Mawar continue to bring heavy rains to coastal areas of southern Japan. After bringing drenching rains and high winds to the Okinawa and Kyushu areas, the storm has turned to the east and is producing heavy rains in the Kansai and Kanto areas.

Transportation disruptions are likely. Several train lines in and around Osaka have announced that service will be suspended today, Friday, June 2, 2023. Widespread delays have also been reported in the greater Tokyo area. Travelers are encouraged to check train schedules before departing.

U.S. Embassy and Consulate Operations:

The U.S. Consulate General Osaka-Kobe will close at 12:00 Noon on Friday, June 2, 2023. The Consulate will reopen for routine business on Monday, June 5, 2023.

At this time, operations at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and U.S. Consulates in Naha, Fukuoka, and Sapporo remain unaffected.

Actions to Take:

U.S. citizens in affected areas are encouraged to monitor local news media and follow guidance of prefectural government officials. As Mawar continues east, residents in central and eastern Japan should remain aware. Updates from the Japan Meteorological Agency and the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center can be found online.
