Weather Alert: Jamaica (November 3, 2024)
Location: Jamaica
Event: A tropical storm warning is now in effect for Jamaica as an area of low pressure over the west-central Caribbean Sea has potential to develop into a tropical cyclone. As of 4:00 p.m. on November 3, Potential Tropical Storm 18 was about 373 miles southwest of Negril and 345 miles south of Kingston, moving northeast at about seven miles per hour. It is expected to become a tropical depression the evening of November 3 and be near Jamaica by late evening on November 4.
This storm is expected to produce heavy rainfall and strong winds over eastern and southern parishes as well as possible landslides in vulnerable sections of the island. All small craft operators should be arriving in port to start preparing for safe harbor.

- Contact your airline to verify airport openings, your updated flight itinerary, and other details.
- Until notified by local authorities, continue to shelter in place in a structure that can withstand rainfall and winds. If such shelter is not available to you, you should move to a local government shelter. Information on government shelters can be found at the links below. DO NOT seek shelter at the U.S. Embassy or Consular Agencies.
- Monitor the National Hurricane Center at www.nhc.noaa.gov, Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management at www.odpem.org.jm and local media for forecasts, shelter locations, warnings, and official instructions.
- Follow all instructions from local authorities.
- Inform a friend or family member of travel plans and your safety over the upcoming week.
- Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
