Weather Alert: Countrywide (Jamaica and Cayman Islands), Hurricane Beryl

Location: Jamaica and the Cayman Islands

Event: The Meteorological Service of Jamaica and National Hazard Management Council of the Cayman Islands have issued Hurricane Alerts for their countries. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts that hurricane conditions are expected to reach the coast of Jamaica within the warning area on Wednesday morning.  Winds are expected to first reach tropical storm strength early on Wednesday and become stronger throughout the day, making outside preparations difficult or dangerous. Hurricane conditions could begin on Thursday across the Cayman Islands. Beryl is currently a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour.  Beryl’s exact path and future strength remain unpredictable. Significant rainfall, storm surge, and dangerously high winds could result in flooding, landslides, power outages and airport and road closures.  You should continue to monitor the storm closely.

Due to the continued impact of Hurricane Beryl, the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, the U.S. Consular Agency in Montego Bay, and the U.S. Consular Agency in George Town, Grand Cayman will be operating at extremely limited capacity on Wednesday, July 3.

Actions to Take:

  • You should ensure your ability to shelter in place in a structure that can withstand hurricane force winds. If such shelter is not available to you, you should move to a government shelter prior to Beryl’s arrival. Information on government shelters can be found at the links below. DO NOT come to the U.S. Embassy or Consular Agency for shelter.
  • Monitor the National Hurricane Center at www.nhc.noaa.gov , Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management at www.odpem.org.jm , the Cayman Islands Government at  www.caymanprepared.gov.ky , and local media for forecasts, shelter locations, warnings, and official instructions.
  • Follow all instructions from local authorities.
  • Inform a friend or family member of travel plans and your safety over the upcoming week.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit (www.ready.gov ).
