Weather Alert: Countrywide (Jamaica and Cayman Islands), Hurricane Beryl

JULY 1, 2024

Location: Jamaica and the Cayman Islands

Event: The Meteorological Service of Jamaica and National Hazard Management Council of the Cayman Islands have issued a Hurricane Watch and a Hurricane Alert for their countries. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts that Hurricane Beryl will make its closest approach to Jamaica from late Tuesday, July 2nd, through Wednesday, July 3rd.  The storm is predicted to pass near the Cayman Islands late Wednesday into Thursday. Beryl is currently a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour.  While the NHC does not predict that the eye of the storm will make landfall in Jamaica, its exact path remains unpredictable and Beryl will have an impact on weather conditions in both countries. Significant rainfall and high winds could result in flooding, landslides, power outages and road closures.  The strength and path of Hurricane Beryl will continue to be updated, and you should monitor the storm closely.

Due to the continued impact of Hurricane Beryl, the U.S. Embassy in Kingston and the U.S. Consular Agency in George Town, Grand Cayman will be closed for routine operations and consular services on Wednesday, July 3.
