Event: Volcanic eruption of Mt. Semeru
On November 19, 2025, Indonesian government authorities raised the alert level of Mount Semeru in East Java to Level IV (the highest alert tier) following a volcanic eruption that created significant ash clouds and pyroclastic flows (hot rock and ash flows) on the volcano’s southeast and southern flanks. Authorities have evacuated nearby residents and cautioned the public to avoid all activities within an 8-kilometer radius of the volcano. Indonesian government emergency response operations are ongoing.
Mt. Semeru is located south of popular tourist destination Mt. Bromo, and approximately 150km (93 miles) south of Surabaya.
