Security Alert: Reykjavik (Iceland), Rise in Petty Theft in Common Tourist Areas

Location:  Reykjavik, Iceland

Event: The U.S. Embassy in Iceland reminds U.S. citizens to exercise general caution when attending large events or frequenting public venues.  Icelandic police report a recent rise in petty theft in common tourist areas, consistent with historical trends during the summer tourist season.  Reykjavik continues to see occasional demonstrations protesting international political developments. As a general precaution, we remind all citizens to remain vigilant if near protests and demonstrations.

 

U.S. government personnel are advised to avoid the demonstrations.

 

Actions to Take: 

  • Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Monitor local media outlets for updates, including the online National Broadcasting service, RUV (also at https://www.facebook.com/ruvenglish).
