Weather Alert: Hong Kong & Macau, Hong Kong Observatory and Macau Metrological and Geophysical Bureau expected to issue Storm Signal 8

Events:

According to media reports, the Hong Kong Observatory and Macau Metrological and Geophysical Bureau are expected to issue Storm Signal 8 sometime on the afternoon or evening of September 5. Expect heavy rains and strong winds with possible flooding, landslides, power outages, and difficult travel conditions throughout Hong Kong and Macau.

If the Storm Signal 8 is in effect at 7:00 a.m. on September 6, the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macau will cancel all visa, passport, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, and notarial appointments scheduled for September 6, 2023. Please visit the Consular Services During the Rainy and Typhoon Season for information about your visa or American Citizen Services appointment.

Actions to Take:

• Monitor local media and the Hong Kong Observatory  and Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau  websites for updates.
• Avoid travel until the storm has dissipated.
• Seek secure shelter.
