WEATHER ALERT: School Closures and Flooding from Tropical Storm Sara –U.S. Embassy Tegucigalpa, Honduras (November 17, 2024)  

LOCATION:Honduras

EVENT:The Honduran Ministry of Education has announced the closures of schools due to tropical storm Sara in the following regions: Gracias a Dios, Atlantida, Colon, Bay Islands which includes Roatan, Yoro, and affected zones in Cortes.  Due to flooding, they have also closed schools in Valle, Choluteca, and Central District which includes Tegucigalpa.  There are many flooded roads and damaged bridges throughout the country following continuous rain.  The entire country has been affected by the storm.  The U.S. Embassy recommends you remain alert and continue to monitor COPECO  (the Honduran office of emergency assistance) for the conditions in your area.  The U.S. Embassy is advising employees to maximize telework, when possible, exercise caution, and stay informed about current conditions.

ACTIONS TO TAKE:  

  • Avoid traveling to flooded areas and exercise caution on the roads. 
  • Seek secure shelter.  
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.  
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit (ready.gov ).  
  • Notify friends and family of your safety.
